About Us
Aunt Kim's Attic was founded in 2001 by Kim Davis. We are located in Calera, Alabama which is in central Alabama near Birmingham. While visiting my sister's family in Austin, TX right after the birth of my neice, Ashleigh, we decided to purchase an unfinished rocker that I would paint as a gift for her. We were both amazed at how well it turned out! When her friends saw it, they wanted me to do something for them too. Thus Aunt Kim's Attic was created.
Since then my husband Gary and I began selling our products at various craft shows in Alabama. The response became so overwhelming that we cannot do many craft shows anymore. Aunt Kim's Attic has grown into a thriving business featuring a lot more than just the custom painted furniture since we began in 2001.
My mother, Patsy Brown (aka Maggie Rae) has been instrumental in the development of the business over the years. She makes some of the wonderful children's clothing, tee pee's, nap mats, and other various sewn and embroidered items you will find on the website. She is very meticulous about quality as you will notice in all of her products. She has also become quite adept in helping me paint the furniture in a pinch - thank God for Mamas!!
My two boys are grown now and I am enjoying my first grandchild, Bailey with hopes of LOTS more in the near future. I cannot put into words how proud I am of each of them. Jason, my oldest, is home now from serving in Kuwait with the Army National Guard. He is married to a wonderful girl and they live close by. Johnathan is my youngest. He lives just down the road so I can visit him whenever I feel like it. I have also acquired two baby boy maltese puppies named Charlie and Simon. You will see pictures of Bailey, Charlie and Simon periodically on the website. They are a constant source of inspiration and amusement to get me through the day.
Painting has always been a passion of mine. I can paint for hours on end not realizing where the time has gone. I love to paint the children's themes most of all because of the vibrant colors. I think I like it because it brings back memories of my childhood growning up in Mobile, Alabama. Things have certainly changed since then. The products you buy at Wal-Mart or Target are not the same quality we had back then. That's what we are trying to recreate in our business. All of our furniture is solid unfinished wood and painted when you order it. We use non-toxic acrylic paint and seal it with lacquer for easy clean up and durability. It takes a little longer, but the result is something beautiful that is a one-of-a-kind heirloom to pass down through your family for generations to come. We go to extra lengths to offer unique items that you will not find on every shelf at every big-box retailer.
